Launching of Nutrition Support Program for TB Patients in Samarinda and surrounding areas: Bayan Peduli and doctorSHARE Collaboration
Indonesia currently ranks second in the world as the largest contributor of TB patients, with an estimated incidence of 1,060,000 cases and mortality of 134,000 cases (MOH, 2023). In East Kalimantan, TB remains a major challenge, with case detection rates and treatment coverage requiring serious attention. Areas with a high risk of TB spread are located in densely populated areas, such as Samarinda, Balikpapan, and Kutai Kartanegara.
In line with the government’s program to support the treatment of drug-sensitive TB patients, this program aims to provide nutritional support in the form of additional food to TB patients in Samarinda City and surrounding areas. In addition, the program will also involve health education and promotion regarding the importance of adequate nutrition in supporting the effectiveness of TB treatment.
The program launch event was held today in Samarinda, which was attended by health workers, local government representatives, beneficiary representatives, and relevant stakeholders as well as doctorSHARE. During the event, the importance of nutritional support in TB treatment was socialized. Tutuk Utomo Nuradhy, Chief Executive Officer of Yayasan Dokter Peduli (doctorSHARE), said, “This program is a strategic step in a joint effort to fight TB in East Kalimantan. By providing proper nutritional support, we are not only supporting treatment, but also improving the quality of life of TB patients.”
The total target beneficiaries for the Nutrition Support Program in the East Kalimantan region are 500 people by involving the Local Government, Health Office and several local health facilities. With the implementation of this program, it is expected to increase the treatment success rate of TB patients in the East Kalimantan region, as well as reduce the incidence and mortality rate due to TB in the region.
